How to Get Auto Repair Shop Clients for Your Agency
Garage customers search under stress — the car won't start, the MOT is due tomorrow, something is making a noise. That single fact should shape everything you sell them. A beautiful website is worthless to a garage. Being findable, reachable and obviously open is worth a great deal.
The shape of this niche
- High share without a website. Comparable to the trades — around half in most cities.
- Very high search volume. "Mechanic near me", "MOT [city]", "car repair open now" are searched constantly.
- Emergency-driven. Most customers didn't plan this. They pick from the first few results.
- Loyal once won. People return to a mechanic they trust for years, which makes customer value high.
- Suspicious of marketing. They've been sold directory listings for two decades.
What they actually need
In priority order — and it's a different order to every other niche:
- A phone number that's one tap away. Most searches happen on a phone, in a hurry.
- Opening hours that are correct. "Open now" filters decide who gets the call.
- Being in the map pack for "mechanic near me". This is where the traffic is.
- Services listed plainly — MOT, diagnostics, clutches, tyres, air-con.
- Reviews. Trust matters more here than almost anywhere; people are afraid of being ripped off.
Notice what isn't on the list: design, branding, a blog. Selling a garage a "modern website" misses the point. Selling them "you're not showing up when someone searches at 8am with a dead battery" does not.
The signals worth targeting
| Signal | What it means | The pitch |
|---|---|---|
| No website | Only a Maps listing | One page: services, hours, phone, directions |
| Hours missing or wrong | Excluded from "open now" results | Free fix — a superb door opener |
| No services listed on the profile | Invisible for "MOT" or "clutch replacement" | Profile categories and services |
| Few reviews despite years trading | Trust gap against competitors | Review collection |
| No photos | Looks abandoned | Ten photos of the workshop |
The opening-hours one is unusually powerful. Many garages have wrong or missing hours on their Google profile, which quietly removes them from a large share of searches. It costs you five minutes to check and it's a genuine, specific finding you can hand over for free.
The opener
Phone, not email — same as the trades.
Hi, is that the owner? Quick one — I checked your Google listing and there are no opening hours set on it. That means when someone searches "mechanic open now" you get filtered out of the results entirely, even though you're open. I can fix that today for nothing. If it helps, I also build simple sites for garages, but the hours thing takes five minutes either way.
Fix it for free, then talk. This is the strongest opening move in this niche. You've proven competence, cost them nothing and created an obligation. A meaningful share of these become paying jobs within a month.
Timing
- Call: 08:00–09:00 (opening up, before the first job on the ramp) or 16:00–17:30.
- Avoid: 10:00–15:00, when they're under a car.
- Days: Tuesday to Thursday. Monday is the backlog from the weekend.
- Season: January and February are quiet in most workshops. Late summer before the autumn MOT rush also works.
Pricing
Fixed, spoken, simple.
£550 for the site — services, hours, phone, directions, photos of the workshop. £25 a month if you want me to keep the Google listing right and reply to reviews.
The monthly is the real prize in this niche. Garage owners have no interest in managing a Google profile and will happily pay a small amount to never think about it. That's stable recurring revenue from a customer who stays for years.
What not to do
- Don't lead with design. They don't care and saying they should insults them.
- Don't email. Same as the trades — the phone rings for jobs, the inbox doesn't.
- Don't oversell. A garage needs one page. Quoting for five sites you can't justify ends the conversation.
- Don't ignore the franchise trap. Branded service centres decide centrally. Independents only.
- Don't skip the free fix. It's the highest-converting thing you can do here, and it takes five minutes.
Building the list
Search "car repair", "mechanic", "MOT" and "garage" separately plus your city. Filter:
- Independent, not a franchise or dealership
- 20+ reviews — real volume of work
- No website, or hours missing from the profile
- Mobile or landline present — you're calling
Usually 25–45 qualifying garages in a mid-sized city, and it's a niche where the free-fix approach means your conversion from call to job is unusually high.
Lead Radary builds and grades the list. Checking opening hours is a manual look at the profile — thirty seconds each, and it's the thing that opens the door.
Summary
- Their customers search in an emergency. Sell findability, not design.
- Missing opening hours removes them from "open now" searches — fix it free.
- Phone, early morning or late afternoon. Never mid-day.
- Fixed price, one page, plus a small monthly for the Google profile.
- Independents only. Franchises decide centrally.
